Recently, Nick Pope has been the public face of a program to declassify and release the entire archive of the British Government's UFO files. This ongoing process, which started in May 2008, has involved the release of around 55,000 documents, some of which were classified Secret UK Eyes Only. As Nick Pope worked on (and wrote) many of the documents concerned, he made a promotional video for the UK's National Archives, announcing the release, advised them on selecting cases of interest to the media, and has given literally hundreds of TV, radio, newspaper and magazine interviews to promote the story.

In his capacity as a freelance journalist Nick Pope has written numerous articles and features for newspapers (including most of the UK's national dailies), magazines and websites, on a range of subjects including the unexplained, conspiracy theories, fringe science, sci-fi, space, defense and intelligence - though there are strict limits on the last two subjects, in view of the UK's Official Secrets Act, which is binding for life.

Nick Pope lectures all around the world, has addressed the Oxford Union and the Cambridge Union Society, as well as speaking at the Royal Albert Hall, the Science Museum, and at Global Competitiveness Forum 2011, where other speakers included President Bill Clinton and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.

What do governments know and think about UFOs? A government UFO investigator gives an insider perspective

Interest in UFOs is at an all time high, largely because of the revelations about the United States UFO program known as AATIP (Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program). This presentation will examine what the AATIP program tells us about the true nature of government interest in UFOs, by comparing AATIP to the British Government's UFO program. The start point for any government UFO program is the desire to know about anything operating in your airspace. While most sightings turn out to be misidentifications of ordinary objects and phenomena, a small but statistically significant percentage remain unexplained, even after thorough investigation. Governments ask whether these sightings could be attributable to Russia, to China, or to something else - possibly even something extraterrestrial. The most interesting cases for governments are those involving pilots and radar operators, and cases where speeds and maneuvers are reported which exceed the capabilities of our most advanced aircraft. This is why the release of three videos showing US Navy jets chasing UFOs is so important, and has led to a fundamental change in how UFOs are viewed not just by the military, but by the media and the public. The subject has truly come out of the fringe and into the mainstream.

Before December 2017 the US claimed that UFOs were of no interest and that no investigations were taking place.
On 16 December 2017 The New York Times revealed that the US Department of Defense had run a program known as AATIP (Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program).
Despite sounding as if it investigated Russian and Chinese aircraft, missiles and drones, AATIP investigated UFOs.
The US Navy has recently issued guidance to its pilots, telling them what to do if they encounter UFOs. This guidance remains classified.
The US Congress is investigating encounters between US Navy jets and UFOs. Several Senators confirm they have received classified briefings and President Trump addressed the situation.
The British Government also investigated UFOs, but our program was not secret, and accepted reports from the public as well as the military.
Most cases could be explained as misidentifications of aircraft lights, satellites, meteors or weather balloons, but around 5% remained unexplained.
We have to be careful because some UFO sightings can be secret, prototype aircraft and drones. Some of these look as if they come from a science fiction movie.
We remained open-minded about the unexplained cases, and did not rule out the possibility that these were extraterrestrial. But we did not have definitive proof of aliens.
If the US government has evidence (e.g. crashed UFOs) that UFOs are extraterrestrial, they did not share it with the UK.
The biggest reason for UFO secrecy is technology - if any UFOs are extraterrestrial, the country that first acquires that technology will dominate the world.
The question of whether or not we are alone in the universe is one of the biggest and most profound questions we can ask. we may be close to getting an answer.
